Earn Community Hours with the Teen Advisory Group

 What is the Teen Advisory Group (aka TAG)?

The Teen Advisory Group at Milton Public Library is the perfect opportunity for teens looking to complete their high school community service hours. Our program is divided into different "streams" to help you find volunteer hours which meet your unique interests.

What "Streams" Can I Volunteer In?

Event Stream

Volunteers work closely with staff to assist in the delivery of various programs for patrons. Past examples include Summer Reading Club Launch, Harry Potter Day, use of the Green Screen, and author visits. Opportunities in this stream area varied and occur on different dates and times. 

Leading to Reading

Volunteers assist staff in the delivery of a reading practice program, working one-on-one with school-aged children to boost their confidence and skills. This program meets once a week all summer long. 

Arts and Letters Stream

Volunteers help to spread joy and encouragement throughout the community by writing letters and sharing positive thoughts with those who need it. Sessions run on a variety of dates and times. 

Social Committee 

Volunteers in this stream meeting regularly with the Teen Services Librarian to help generate youth-led content for MPL’s social media channels, as well as MPL’s teen website, and Online Teen Summer Reading Club. 

Volunteer Responsibilities:

To attend scheduled shifts regularly and on-time, and to communicate with staff in advanced regarding any absences or conflicts.

To be fully engaged in their opportunity, participating to the best of their ability and demonstrating enthusiasm for their assigned event.

To act as a positive role model and teen advocate within the community, and as representatives of Milton Public Library.

To provide feedback to staff about volunteer opportunities and the program in general.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Completed Grade 8 but not graduated from High School

A resident of Milton, or attending a Milton High School

Passion for community involvement, especially within a library setting

Conscientious and reliable

Friendly and welcoming attitude

Strong communication skills

Openness to learning new skills and taking on new opportunities

Able to work independently in order to fulfill assigned tasks

Able to work well as part of a team in order to fulfill assigned tasks

Able to illustrate empathy and patience with others, regardless of age group

How are Volunteers Chosen to be a Member of TAG?

Volunteers are selected based on their written application, references, and a short interview. Applications are carefully reviewed by staff in accordance with the volunteer profile provided in the application package. We thank all applicants interested in volunteering with Milton Public Library, however only those applicants shortlisted for a position will be contacted for an interview.
