Tomatosphere Scientists

Join us for an out-of-this-world scientific investigation. This fun 4 week, interactive program will investigate the effects space has on tomato seed germination. Participants will receive two packages of seeds: one package of seeds that were sent into space, and a second package of untreated, "controlled" seeds. Participants will conduct an experiment by planting seeds to determine the effects of the space environment, and will be required to chart their observations daily. For four weeks, participants will log on to Zoom for 45-60 minutes to discuss their findings and enjoy a variety of space-themed activities. The results from the Tomatosphere experiment will be sent to the Canadian Space Agency. For ages 7-10.

Tuesdays at 6:45 pm (October 19 - November 9)

Take & Make: Prehistoric Amber

Prehistoric Amber is tree sap that has fossilized over millions of years! Leaves, flowers and insects have been found trapped inside and scientists have learned a great deal about prehistoric times by analyzing the DNA of these little extinct creatures perfectly preserved by the hardened resin that surrounds them. (Just like in the movie Jurassic Park!).

This activity kit provides each child with their own piece of REAL Colombian amber to polish and take home.  The amber comes in its natural state (dull and "crusted") and we provide the simple tools to remove the crusty shell and polish the piece into a smooth, lightweight golden gem. If you polish a piece really well and look closely, some even contain an insect! What a great way to celebrate Dinovember!

Pick up a Prehistoric Amber Fossil Activity Kit and polish some history of your very own. And don't forget to check out some dinosaur books from the library when you pick up your kit!

These kits will be available on a first come, first served basis for pick up from the Sherwood Branch (6355 Main St. W), beginning November 13. One kit per family.  Limited number of kits available.
